Ann was born in Capelle, North Brabant, the Netherlands and moved to Brockville in 1951, a year after her husband Steve immigrated from the Netherlands. Steve was a recognized hero in an underground resistance group during WWII. The young couple started a new life in Brockville and held a dutch-style wedding at the Wall Street United Church. They were quick to develop many friendships through their various community interests. Steve and Ann started a successful business, Eskay Printing, which was sold after Steve’s death and continues today as Henderson Printing. Ann managed the demands of three young children and returned to school in Kingston to further her education. Ann worked as an Occupational Therapist at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital until retirement. When Ann was not working, she enjoyed camping, skiing and cycling with her three children. Ann had many interests. In addition to visiting her five grandchildren, she spent many hours doing fine cross-stitch pictures, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She loved her dog Oliver and regularly walked him to Hardy Park to enjoy the river and ships. She also liked to travel, which included returning to the Netherlands to see her niece Teunie Lankhaar and family, the Covés and other relatives. Within Canada she visited Steve’s brother, his wife and five daughters who had also moved to Canada, as well as Jack’s family in Ottawa. Ann was predeceased by her parents Teuna Paans (1962) and Adrianus Johannes van der Waals (1964) and her sister Wilhelmina Lankhaar (2009). Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
