Obituary of Harley Glen Eyre

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harley Glen Eyre, who departed just before his 80th birthday. Harley was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend, whose unwavering devotion to his family, profession, and community left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born to Richard James and Luella Pearl Eyre, Harley grew up in Brockville and attended Brockville Collegiate Institute, where he met his cherished wife, Linda. They were united in marriage on October 7, 1967, and together they built a life filled with love, joy, and shared experiences.

A passionate educator, Harley dedicated his career to the advancement of both students and fellow educators. He began his journey at Teachers College and further pursued his education at Queen's University, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s in Education. His commitment to teaching culminated in his role as Superintendent, where he significantly influenced the educational landscape.

In his position as Superintendent, Harley oversaw 35 schools and played a crucial role in the development of Special Education curricula that addressed the needs of students of all abilities. His dedication to inclusive education and his ability to foster leadership among peers earned him and the school board provincial recognition for excellence in Special Education. He served as a mentor, consistently encouraging educators to fulfill their potential and embrace leadership opportunities.

Outside of his professional achievements, Harley found immense joy living by the St. Lawrence River at 27 Jessie for 38 years, where he and Linda graciously hosted family and friends for unforgettable gatherings. A lifelong member of the Brockville Yacht Club since 1972, he spent countless cherished hours aboard his boat, Recess, navigating the waters of the 1000 Islands. Refugee Island was a particularly special place for him, where he could relax, explore, and take in the beauty of the river. Whether he was boating or simply unwinding, Harley treasured his time by the water, often saying, "Time spent on the dock is time well wasted."

Harley had a deep appreciation for classic cars, reflecting his passion for craftsmanship and nostalgia. He also valued reconnecting with friends in the community and was known for his warm, welcoming nature.

Above all, Harley was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his sons, Matthew (Mary Lynn Love) and Aaron; his beloved granddaughters, Sydney and Charlotte; and his siblings, Theda and Richard. He was predeceased by his son, Geoffrey, whose memory remained with him always.

Harley's legacy is one of kindness, mentorship, and a steadfast commitment to education and community. His gentle guidance, humour, and generosity will be profoundly missed and forever cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
