Obituary of Nellie Carolan

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our mother and grandmother, Nellie Carolan, entered into rest, peacefully, at the St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Ellen “Nellie” Philomena Carolan (Kerlin) of Brockville aged 95 years. Beloved wife of the late Brendan Carolan. Dear mother of Sheilagh Best (James), Brian (Joanne), Kevin, and Eileen McCrae (Dave). Loving grandmother of Brendan (Lara) and Christopher (Jennifer) Best, Lexi and Ryan Carolan, Andrew (Chelsea) and Aaron McCrae, Cara (Curt) Howard, and Samantha (Reis) Hanna. Great grandmother of James, Hadrian, Amelia, Alexandra, Declan and Daeva. Nellie is also survived by sisters Bridget & Annie and sister-in-law Lilly, and brothers James, Mickey and Patrick. Predeceased by parents, George and Ann Kerlin, sister Mary, and brothers Brian, Denis and Philip and by two infant siblings – Denis and Bridget. Nellie was born near Claudy, Co. Derry, N. Ireland and followed Brendan to Canada in 1955. Here they built their home on Duke Street in Brockville where they raised their family and where many happy memories were made. Nellie called Duke Street home for over 60 years and valued the friendship and support of wonderful neighbours well into her 90’s. Nellie was a lifetime member of the CWL and a founding member of St. John Bosco Parish and tried to live her life as a quiet example of devout Christian faith. As an expression of sympathy, please consider a donation to St. Lawrence Lodge, The Alzheimer Society of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville or St. John Bosco Parish. Words are not enough to express the family’s gratitude to all who supported our mother in her life’s journey -- the wonderfully caring team at the St. Lawrence Lodge, Red Cross Care Partners, VON Smile Program. The exceptional care provided by Dr. B. Van Jaarsveld & his staff at Chelsea Court and friends and family, who provided care, companionship, and compassion to Nellie during her last few years at the Lodge. Your kindness will not be forgotten. A Private family graveside will be held at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral will be Celebrated at St. John Bosco Parish at a later date. In memory of Nellie, donations to the St. John Bosco Parish, St. Lawrence Lodge Foundation or the Leeds and Grenville Alzheimer’s Society would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Barclay Funeral Home 137 Pearl Street East, Brockville entrusted with the arrangements. Messages of condolence may be made online at www.barclayfuneralhome.com.
