BLISS, Frederic “Ted” Marks (Retired Dentist) Entered into rest in Brockville on Sunday March 24th, 2013. Beloved husband of the former Pamela Fergus. Loving father of Susan Van Tine of Hamburg, NY, Fraser Bliss of Turku, Finland, Douglas Bliss of Sackville, NB and the late David Bliss. Grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 8. Lifelong golfer, skier, artist, world traveller, sailor, fisherman, and nature lover Ted Bliss will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors. Born December 3, 1925 in Westmount, Quebec he grew up and received his schooling there and pursued the family sport, golf while at the summer house in Hudson, Quebec. In 1942, at age sixteen he travelled to Banff Alberta where he was golf caddy for the summer. The following summer he worked in Saskatchewan helping with the harvest as part of the war effort. Ted served in the Royal Canadian Navy and then the Royal Canadian Air Force, with his best friend Ross, between 1944 and 46. He graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctorate in Dentistry in 1952. During this time, for a summer job he worked in the field for the Dominion Forestry Service contributing to the 4th edition of “The Natives Trees of Canada”. For a number of years he was a medical officer attached to the Army Reserve at the Brockville Armouries. Upon moving to Brockville in 1952 he began his life-long career in dentistry. He was well known in the Brockville area and served and been a member of a number of clubs, boards and associations: Chair of the Brockville School Board, member of the Brockville Yacht Club and Ski Club, the Thousand Islands Residents Association, and he was long associated with Grenadier Island Golf Club, as player, President and Treasurer. He was also a charter member of the informal men’s club who lunched at the New York Café for many years. He met his beloved wife of 49 years, Pamela, while on a skiing trip in Austria. They pursued their passion for skiing, sailing and world travel for many decades and travelled to all seven continents, and were one of the first to do eco-tourism to Antarctica in the 1990’s. They shared a belief in conservation and ensured that lands around La Rue Mills will be held in trust as wildlife habitat. He raised four children in Brockville and imparted to them all his love of the outdoors, skiing, golf, tennis, sailing and fishing. Weekend ski trips to most ski hills in Quebec, New York State and one to the Rockies were famous in the Bliss household for many years. There are many fond memories of family summer trips on a boat in the Thousand Islands, camping in the Adirondacks, vacationing in Kennebunkport and after 1967 to the cottage at Mallorytown Landing. He and Pam moved to the river house full time in 1988 where he continued all his interests. Ted took up painting as hobby in his fifties and he continued this passion till just recently. Many of his nature watercolour paintings hang in houses of friends and families as well as the Brockville General Hospital. Family and friends will be received for a reception at the Barclay Funeral Home 137 Pearl Street East, Brockville on Saturday March 30th, 2013 from 1 to 4 pm. Interment Oakland Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to the Leeds Grenville Branch Ontario SPCA or to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
