Ruggel Jenkins was born in Scotsguard, Saskatchewan on May 25, 1923. He lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl on the prairies before moving to Kingston area in his teens. During World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He started working for the Department of Highways at 17 years of age and continued to work for them for 37 years. He met many great friends through his years with the “Highways”. In 1949, his job then took him to Southwestern Ontario. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Marion (Mac) McCreary. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in February 2010. In 1963, he started a part-time endeavor of building and then operating the Woodhome Motel in Bayfield, Ontario. He made many dear friends through the years of “running the motel”. After retiring from the Highways and the motel, he moved to Hill Island in the Thousand Islands in 1980, to reconnect with old friends and make wonderful new friends. He had a very active retirement of boating, golfing, skiing, and curling – intermingled with many “projects”. He continued curling until Thanksgiving of 2010. He skied every year at Owl’s Head up until February of 2010, a 38-year tradition. Rug passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 24, 2011. Predeceased by his sister, Hope Jenkin Jones and brother-in-law Ken Jones, and survived by his loving wife Marion, son Bill, daughter Mary, daughter-in-law Sue, and grandchildren Hilary and Samantha. A celebration of his life will be held at the Gananoque Curling Club on March 12, 2011 from 12 pm to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer Society, the Gananoque Curling Club, or a charity of choice. Rug was one of a kind! He will be missed!
