Obituary of Georgina Olive Hodgins
HODGINS, Georgina Whittaker
Peacefully entered into rest at St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville, on Saturday, April 18, 2015, after a long and well-blessed life. Predeceased by father George Whittaker and mother Olive (Anderson) Whittaker. Beloved wife of the late Mel Hodgins and sister of the late Frances Laidlaw and the late Helen Louise Whittaker. Survived by daughter Melinda and son Peter, as well as niece Susan Tadvalkar and nephews George Laidlaw and Bill Laidlaw and their families, as well as many cousins. Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, in the 1920s and 1930s, Georgie spent summers with her family sailing on Lake Ontario, and with her sisters often crewed for her father to win many races. After graduating from McMaster University, Georgie found her calling as a teacher, helping many befuddled students to unravel the complexities of Shakespeare. At the end of WWII, Georgie met and married Mel Hodgins, newly returned from the liberation of Holland. In later years, Georgie was never happier than with family and friends at the cottage on Green Lake, Shawville, always first in the water at the beginning of summer and often swimming the lake from end to end. Georgie loved to travel, and after she and Mel retired, they enjoyed many cruises and tours throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and the Far East. Georgie also loved the company of her friends in Brockville and especially valued her regular bridge games, particularly when she won. In keeping with Georgie's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Georgie's ashes will be interred beside Mel's in the Old Village Cemetery, Shawville, QC at a later date. We thank the staff of Elm Unit, St. Lawrence Lodge, for their unceasing care and kindness to Mother. In place of flowers, donations to The St. Lawrence Lodge Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged. Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl St. East Brockville, 613-342-2792 entrusted with the arrangements.
