I am very sorry to hear of Betty's passing. She seemed to be a woman ahead of her time. She and my mom, Ellie Delaney-Fry (nee Zawila - from Baltimore and then Gananoque) were very good friends and shared a lot of fun times together dating as far back as the 1950s. They had a strong intellectual bond and deep respect for each other's professional lives, and also really enjoyed cajoling each other. I seem to remember a lot of stories about partying on the River and renting cottages together with friends. I wish you peace, Betty. My Mom also just passed last week, so I imagine the two are in heaven now, hashing out an idea over a strong tea and a cigarette. It brings me comfort, too. Much love to all of you, Jennifer Piercey (nee Delaney)

I read Betty's travel stories for years, but only got to know her in her later years. She was a great friend of my uncle, Perry Tooker, and shared many birthday celebrations with him. Betty was a great story-teller and a compassionate person. She was a true Brockville treasure.

Bett Bett Bett how I shall miss you. it was the time of my life when you lived with me for three months when you broke your ankle. I wish I had had a tape recorder. The stories were so interesting. I wish I could have made a book with every one of her colums in it. What a treasure that would be.
Condolences to molly, Anne & all her family. A great life very well lived. Fondest memories, Wendy

From June 23rd to June 25th, 2011 Betty and I were on a bus trip to New York City. I had wanted to go for some time but did not want to go alone and we were put in touch with each other. It was one of the best trips I ever had. Betty knew all the bars/restaurants to go to and she even got me to go to see Pricilla Queen of the Desert, which was a hoot to see in a cosmopolitan city like New York.
We will all miss you, your sense of humour, endless energy and ability to see the best in everyone you met.
Rest in your well deserved peace.
Mary

So sad to hear of Betty's passing. But happy to say I have great memories of spending time with her while living in Brockville and over the years when visiting my home town.
My Mom, Norma (Montgomery) Noakes worked with Betty at the Recorder and Times back in the late 1940s. They became lifelong friends. As a family we spent time with Betty on the river up in the islands; and Mom shared a few adventures with Betty on the New York City trips. In later years Saturday morning breakfasts at Bud's on the Bay were a regular event that Mom and Betty never missed; and one usually filled with fun stories and great reminiscing. Betty always had a good story to tell and a great sense of humour to go with it!
Our thoughts are with the family as they remember Betty. We will be remembering too!
