Una Murphy

Obituary of Una Anne Murphy

The world is a bit darker today with the passing this morning of the Dublin beauty, Una Murphy, peacefully at her Brockville home, surrounded by her daughters.  Despite her tiny frame, Una’s sparkling and vivacious personality filled the room, snaring everyone within in her sphere with her endless compassion, humour and charm.  Always up for a bit of fun, Una’s door was open to stranger and friends alike, and there was always room at the table for one more.  An inveterate traveler, Una loved nothing better than globe-trotting with her husband Declan (d. April 24, 2002) or her best friend of 89 years, Carmel O’Callaghan, always with a cigarette and glass of wine at hand.  The people whose lives Una has touched with her endless compassion and warmth of spirit are legion while her children remember with gratefulness, their mother’s unconditional love and unwavering support for both them and any stray friends who needed a hug, a kiss and way too much food.

Una is survived by her partner in crime, brother Patrick (Ginnane) and family, as well as her beloved Kirwan family; her much loved cousin Patricia Gilmartin; her children, Kealin (m. Skip Lesage), Sheenagh (m. Doug Williams), Deirdre (m. Randy Boyd) and Siobhan, as well as the light of her life, her 7 grandchildren, Maeve, Ruadhan, Declan and Kealin (Williams) and Connor, Siobhan and Bridget (Murphy-Boyd); and also by our “other” Murphy family, Una (Arthur), Gerald, Patricia, Angela and Michael.

In deference to Una’s wishes, there will be no formal viewing or funeral but at later date, her children will be hosting a funeral mass and a raucous, joyful and bountiful celebration of life in a good Irish wake.  Should you want to celebrate Una’s life, a donation to a charity of your choice would exactly reflect the generous, giving person she was.
