Obituary of Geoffrey Douglas Chittenden

Geoffrey (Geoff) Douglas Chittenden passed away at 92 years on September 1st, 2019, surrounded by his family. Geoff leaves behind his loving daughter Michele and his cherished granddaughter Alexandra with whom he shared a close bond.

Geoff was born in Hamilton, Ontario on July 2nd, 1927 to Herbert Frank Chittenden and the former Ethel Maud King.  He was raised in his beloved Paris, Ontario. Geoff is predeceased by his wife Connie (nee Hitsman), brother Donald Chittenden and sister Marjory Elson.  He will be lovingly missed by nieces Anne Chittenden (John) and Judy Rippe (Robbie).

Geoff had a long, interesting life full of adventure and exploration. In his youth he had his pilot’s licence; sailed the Caribbean as a radio operator on a ship; lived in Baker Lake, Nunavut; and worked on the Dienfenbunker when it was a top-secret project. He had many hobbies and enjoyed golfing, camping, hiking, snowmobiling, and boating on the St. Lawrence River. One of Geoff’s great passions was photography. He was the photographer for local community groups and had a photography show at the Brockville Public Library. Geoff spent many happy hours exploring country roads and nearby villages on his motorcycle or in his VW van with his camera around his neck looking for that perfect photo.

Geoff trained as an electrical engineer and was employed primarily as a manager in the telecommunications industry. He was very clever and a life-long learner. After retirement he studied computing, woodworking, and photography at college.

A proud member of the Legion for 55 years, Geoff regularly participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies and other Legion events.  He was also a Telephone Pioneer, and a member of the Council of Canadians and the Probus Club of Brockville.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to Dr. A. Tran and Dr. H. O’Neill, (Kingston General Hospital) for the compassionate care Geoff received during the last week of his life.

A graveside service with a Legion Tribute has already taken place.

As an expression of sympathy, please donate in Geoff’s memory to the University Hospitals Kingston Fund (UHKF) or the World Wildlife Fund Canada. Arrangements entrusted to the Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl St. East Brockville. Messages of condolence may be sent online at www.barclayfuneralhome.com.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held.
