John Mack

Obituary of John Mack

John Joseph Mack entered this world on June 24, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY, and passed away suddenly at his home in Brockville, Ontario on March 17, 2020. He was 74 years old. Born to parents Joseph and Irene (Johnston) Mack, stories over the years were always of an active, bright and playful boy who loved to tease and joke. After losing his father at the young age of 8, John stepped in with a maturity beyond his years as the new man of the house. Upon graduation from Delehanty High School, Queens, NY in 1963, John completed studies as a Draftsman. In 1965 he joined the US Air Force as a Loadsmaster. He completed his one-year tour of Vietnam in 1969 after earning two Air medals and a Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism. Upon return from Vietnam, he moved to Canada and married his childhood sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Carolyn (Baker) on May 22, 1971. Settling in Brockville, John worked in the Logistics field for the rest of his career, retiring early at the age of 57. Those who knew John appreciated his positive outlook, his ever-present optimism, his ability to tackle and succeed at anything he turned his hand to and his unique sense of humour which kept those around him in stitches. Always one to keep busy, his interests ranged from gardening to antique cars. An avid lover of history, he devoted countless hours to the Heritage Place Museum in Lyn, Ontario. John was the backbone of his family. His strength and presence will be forever missed by wife Carolyn, children Christine and David (Rachel). He was blessed with three granddaughters, Rachel, Lauren and Abigail who all knew how fortunate they were to have him as a grandfather. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Howard (Michelle) Baker and Arthur (Melody) Baker and their families, including two nieces, Susan and Cathy Baker and a nephew, Brian (Jacquie) Baker. A private ceremony took place Thursday, March 19, 2020, at Oakland Cemetery in Brockville, Ontario. Donations can be made in his honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation.
