Renovating houses was something Stirling men had an apptitude for, and that rang true for Uncle Keith as well.
My wife Judy and I bought a "fixer upper" in Ottawa when we were first married, and Uncle Keith drove down to Ottawa to help me pull it apart and put it back together again! I particularly remember his meticulous work stripping, sanding and re-staining our oak banister and laying new tile in our kitchen.
He was generous, kind and quick witted, and spending time with him always put a smile on my face.
I recall as a young teenager being brought up to the cockpit on a flight from Toronto to Vancouver when Uncle Keith was flying, and visiting many times in Brockville with the family.
From reading the comments from others, it's clear Keith had a gift of making those around him smile and feel good about themselves. That's the Uncle Keith I will remember.
Love and condolences to Mark, Grant and the extended family.

Dear Mark, Grant and family:
We send you our deepest sympathies.
We are remembering Keith from different eras and places. First, he was the accomplished son of very close friends, and neighbours, of Tom’s parents in Montreal. Well remembered are the festive Christmas Eves complete with loud brass instruments. When we moved to Brockville, Keith and Susan were already living there, and they introduced us to many people at their King Street home. And the best part was when they became our wonderful next door neighbours on Bethune Street in Brockville. Keith kept watch over and was interested in our young and growing family. He would easily engage our young children in very cute conversations. We had daily visits over the back fence and his dear dog was always by his side. He then remained a friend for many more years.
Keith was always warm, gregarious and entertaining and we won’t forget his smile.

Susan and Keith were my landlords when I was going to UBC. When I graduated in 1969, I was at a loss as to what to do with my life. Keith suggested that I join the airlines and 3 months later I was in training at CP Air, and spent 37 years with the company. That was life changing advice and I have been forever grateful to Keith. He and Susan , with their 2 little boys , were the kindest landlords and I remember them with great fondness. My condolences to the family.

I saw the obituary that you placed in the Ottawa Citizen and I wanted to share my fond memories of the time that Keith spent volunteering with WaterCan (now WaterAid Canada).
We traveled together to a few events in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver with grocery chain managers and suppliers (and municipal officials). These events were sponsored thanks to Tony Gaskin of Chevron Chemicals, which had developed environmentally-friendly household cleaning products and road salt alternatives back in the 1980s, long before these things were broadly seen as important. Through a sponsorship program, part of the sales of the cleaning products went to the funding of clean water projects in developing countries through WaterCan.
Keith was an engaging and compelling ambassador for WaterCan as part of that sponsorship program and he shone in that role, coming in to help us after the founder of WaterCan, Michael Lubbock, had died. He used his flight credits as a retired pilot to support WaterCan's work. All these years later, in 2020, that work continues through WaterAid Canada.
During one (very early) morning flight between Calgary and Vancouver, Keith called out excitedly, "Look! A terminator!" I leaned over to look out the window and saw, parallel to the horizon, a fiery line of flame between the dark night below and the blue sky above. Keith told me that the conditions had to be just right for that natural phenomenon to occur. He had seen it only a few times before as a pilot. I had never seen anything like it before -- or since.
My sincerest sympathies to Keith's family in your time of grief.

Dear Grant, Mark and Family,
I extend my sincerest condolences at this very sad time.
Your family lived a few doors east of us on King Street in Brockville. I recall many times walking by and your father being outside with a kind greeting and a warm smile.

I have fond memories of Keith’s wonderful tales which he shared with my husband David and I of the Aircraft carrier Bonaventure!. We had a friend who was a sailor on the Carrier and Keith educated us on how you land on one. He was fun and a very kind man. Rest in peace Capitan Sterling, your last flight will put you in the safe hands of God!

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I have great memories of being on board the cutter off Blockhouse Island to see the July 1st fireworks. Captain Stirling was in full glory at the helm.
I am convinced he has already departed first class to a destination where COVID does not apply.
I hope your memories sustain you at this difficult time. Take time to be good to yourselves.
Sincerely,
Mike Milne

Keith Stirling always had a positive and uplifting presence with the gift of wit and quick humour generating both smiles and laughs to those around him. My own memories focus on him at the helm of the retired RCMP leaving the harbour with a salute and yes , a Stirlling expression of live life full out as he pushed the throttle forward. Enjoyed tennis with him and his acceptance to speaking engagements on his life as a commercial pilot. He always offered his boat for my hosting request for our economic clients seeking location in our fair city. He had a part in bringing Shell Canada to Brockville and we enjoyed both the remaining libation and social discourse following that memorable cruise. God Bless
