Obituary of Dr. Peter "Wade" Johnson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Peter Wade Johnson, in Brockville, on March 25, 2021, his 79th birthday. Wade will be forever missed by his loving wife and best friend Beverley Joan (Smith) Johnson. Wade was the only child of the late Marjorie (Wade) and Peter Johnson. He is fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Virginia Roode (Jim) and Diane Miller; nephews Jeff Roode (Aidan & Emmett) and Steve Roode, Kiki (Jackson & Kennedy); several cousins and their families. Wade was born in 1942 in Chatham, Ontario and attended school there. He then attended the University of Guelph and received his Bachelor of Science degree (1964) and his Master of Science degree (1966). He then attended the University of California where he received his Doctorate Degree in Plant Pathology (1969). His 35 year career was with the Research Branch of Agriculture Canada. He spent 8 years as a Research Scientist at the Harrow Research Station, 4 years at the Vineland Research Station, 10 years as the Director of Tobacco Research Station in Delhi, Ontario and 13 years as Director of the Atlantic Food and Horticulture Research Centre in Kentville, Nova Scotia. He retired to Brockville in 2004. He met Bev, “the love of his life”, at the University of Guelph where she was taking Teachers Physical Education Courses in the summer. They were married in 1967. They both loved golfing and after Wade retired, they took many wonderful golfing trips around the world. In their later years they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida. They had a wonderful life together and made many great friends along the way. Due to the COVID restrictions, a private family service will be held. A future reception will be planned. In memory of Wade donations to Wall St. United Church or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Cardiovascular or Palliative Care Program would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl St. E., Brockville. Messages of condolence may be made online at www.barclayfuneralhome.com.
