I was lucky enough to meet and work with Lorne about 30 years ago. He was a special person whom I'll always remember as a brother in arms when it came to our VW diesel cars. One cold Feb., Lorne and I were dragging my frozen car around a Nortel parking lot try to get it started in -25c weather. What I remember is Lorne finding it all so funny and his laughter and smile. Save travels Lorne....

Neil and I have fond memories of Lorne. Me behind the piano bench, discussing wording from a hymn or the something music related, delving into the how and the why. Always an interesting discussion with some laughs interspersed.
Neil, as a Teacher, remembers Lorne as the Dad who made lunches for his sweet daughters, often with a creative touch such as an addition of a note with a joke or a drawing.

I am deeply grateful for Lorne’s help to me and Patti when I broke my femur in a traffic accident and had to go to Hotel Diu hospital in Kingston. Lorne contacted Patti and gently advised her about what happened. He brought Patti to Kingston to visit then later took me back to Ottawa. He later gave me a self-propelled reel mower with attached drum roller so I could cut the grass using the mower and a crutch for support! He was so apologetic a few years later when our young son fell off Lorne’s swing and broke his arm. He was truly a most helpful, empathetic man who truly loved to help people. He’ll be sorely missed.

We were shocked and saddened by the news of Lorne's passing. A rich life cut short.
After I met Lorne at BNR 36 years ago, we embarked on a number of ventures together, sharing many ups and downs over the years. In addition to benefiting greatly from his breadth and depth of practical skills and resoucefulness and the support of Carole and his family, I enjoyed his cheerful good humour, positive outlook and enthusiasm.
Sharon and I offer our sincere condolences to Carole and his family.

My condolences to Lorne’s family. I just read his obituary in the Ottawa Citizen and knew I recognized his name…a blast from the past. I worked with Lorne at Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa in the Technical Documentation dept. back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was always happy and loved to chat, and I have fond memories of working with him. Thinking of you all at this sad time. Julie (Paul) Julian

So sad to hear of Lorne's passing. He was one of the most interesting, warm and funny characters I ever worked with. He took me under his wing at BNR, and I always felt thankful for that. His dedication to his family was an inspiration. My condolences to the family. Bob McLeod.

My deepest sympathy goes out to The Birtch family members. Lorne would drop his Granddaughter Olivia at my house when she needed a ride into Ottawa. Sometimes some of Grandma's baking would be included, and Lorne's eyes would sparkle with love and praise as he handed over the cherished delights. He also looked after Barry and I in Home Depot prior to Barry 's transfer and sat with us at our first Christmas party where he and Carole made us feel really welcomed. Rest in Peace Lorne

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Birtch (Carole), Kathy, Patty and families.
I was so sorry to hear about Lorne, who I still think of as Mr. Birtch, even after all these years. I spent a lot of time in the Birtch household during my teenaged years, and have many fond memories. I always remember Kathy saying "I'll call my Dad, he'll come and get us", at any time of the evening. If Lorne tired of his chauffeuring duties, he hid it well. I also recall Lorne's love of technology - he was the first person I knew to own a "Macintosh Computer" back in the day.
I hope your good memories bring you some measure of comfort in the difficult days and weeks ahead.
Sincerely,
Nadine Beaumaster (McEwan)
