Obituary of Hugh Alec Johnston

Hugh Alec Johnston It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hugh Alec Johnston at the Brockville General Hospital at the age of 90. Originally from Victoria British Columbia Hugh graduated from UBC with a master’s in chemical engineering and moved to Ontario to work for DuPont Canada, eventually becoming Manager of Nylon Intermediates at DuPont’s Maitland works. An avid sports enthusiast, Hugh played baseball in his youth and competitive golf through most of his life. He also had a passion for travel, music, and theatre. He passes on his love of science, sports and the arts, and his qualities of kindness, generosity and optimism to his children, grandchildren, and everyone he knew. Hugh will be sorely missed by his family; partner Sally Campbell and children, sons David (Apassara), Hugh Jr. (Susan) and beloved daughter Laura; grandchildren Dennis, Marc, Lucas, Samantha, Kathryn and Mint; and great grandchild Hanna. Hugh is predeceased by his wife of 47 years Joan (nee Whitty), wife Gloria (Eadie), his parents David and Jean (nee Mackenzie), sister Barbara, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Hugh is also survived by many nieces and nephews and in-laws on Joan’s side and brother-in-law Leo (Barbara) and niece Elsen in Okanogan Falls B.C. In keeping with Hugh’s wishes a private graveside Committal Service will take place at a later date with Hugh’s family. Donations can be made to the Brockville General Hospital Palliative Care Program and the Brockville and Area Food Bank. Hugh’s final message to us: Please don’t think of me as being gone. Just as when you’d see me walking off the 18th green, after I was out of sight, I wasn’t gone. I’m just heading off to another round at another glorious course. Please remember the wonderful times we shared together. Cheers to you my friends until we meet again.
