Sincere condolences to Sam's family. Many great memories of Sam on stage at the Arts Centre over the years, or telling stories, reading poetry, and playing his accordion. i will think of him whenever i play Mountain Road, which begins one of Sam's favourite sets. Sam was a fine Irish gentleman. I had many wide-ranging chats with the always cheerful Sam at Irish Céilís over the years. I was also lucky enough to join Sam in various groups as we played some sprightly jigs and reels. Sam had a real flair for these tunes, first on his harmonica and in later years on the button accordion. Sam also shared his acting skills playing Leopold Bloom in a number of our June 16, Bloomsday, celebrations of James Joyce's great novel Ulysses, Sincere condolences to Sam's family and friends.

I first met Sam at the River Dog Cafe, around 2003-2004. I'd turned up to play with Fiddlers Plus, headed up by Eithne,Roma and Stewart. It was the start of a musical relationship that would last a decade or more, that saw us through many events, good laughs and quirky situations. There's no such thing as a boring person-everyone has a story-Sam was no exception. I asked him once how he could read music (better than most) and how he started out. As he hailed from Belfast, I'd assumed he was an Irish virtuoso, skilled in the black art of jigs reels waltzes hornpipes airs and polkas...not the case. Apparently, at National School, he had to play Bach and Beethoven on his chromatic harmonica. As a special treat they were sometimes allowed to play Gershwin, American show tunes or jazz. We played a couple of Celtic festivals in Brockville and a Cajun accordion player who was on the bill, flogged him his first instrument. And off he went, Sam became our master button accordion player. Sam told me one time that he was a former Shakespearean actor and an ordained Minister! The two apparently clashed and he had to make a new vocational choice. Lastly, we did a Fiddlers gig at the Wedgewood in Brockville. Teabreak came around that was always served in the residents bar. As I leant over, I tried the beer tap, it was on, a no brainer, there was always something special about us drinking free beer in teacups... RIP Sam, You've made your mark on so many people you've touched.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of my Lion friend Sam and wish to extend my sincere sympathies to Sam jr, Denise and Shawna. Sam and I joined the Brockville Lions at the same time in December of 1981. We worked on a number of committees together and had a lot of fun in the process. I always enjoyed his sense of humour. He will be missed by all knew him.
