Anne truly felt like family to so many, and our family was no different. Seeing her in the photo in her obituary brings memories of her genuine and caring demeanor. When I was a child, I took lessons from her in her home, and she taught our children in our home. She was easy to talk to, and easy to be around. We will miss her immensely.

Anne meant so much to me as a friend and colleague at Rideau District High School. I will never forget her performance of “Cli,b Every Mountain “ at commencement. She was a loving, kind soul who always put her students first. We will miss her so much.

To follow up on my sister's, Catherine Alexander's, note: Nanny was a singular woman and a special Godmother. Like so many others have mentioned, Nanny was a strong, confident, supportive, and talented woman who was crucial to the development of my passion and appreciation for music. My mother, Anna Alexander, told me that I started voice lessons with Nanny to teach me how to breathe probably (from the diaphragm!) to help with my asthma. And that lead to 11 years of dedicated lessons that I looked forward to every week. Eventually, Nanny got me involved in duets, trios, and quartets, as well as the Music Festival. While we had grown apart over the past few years, Nanny's presence and gifts will never be forgotten. Thank you, Nanny.

Mrs Landon - where do I begin?
Like others have written, I remember Mrs Landon visiting my elementary school (Sweets Corners) every year before Christmas with the high school bands and choirs. I thought Mrs Landon was magic - the way she conducted each group - cuing each entrance and cut off, controlling the dyanmic levels and articulation. Every band and choir member watched her. They all looked and sounded so professional - she instilled that in them.
Once in high school, I joined the jazz band, mixed choir and girls choir. I was in Music class every term; it was my favourite class. I also took private singing lessons from Mrs Landon, first after school in the Music Practice Room, and then later in Athens, after she retired. She was always so generous with her time - a half-an-hour lesson was always an hour!
She introduced me to so many beautiful broadway ballads and traditional pieces. I loved our lessons, not just for the singing but also for the time I got to be with her and chat. She had such a strong and giving personality and I always loved hearing her opinions on topics.
When I was working as an elementary school music teacher later on in life, I could call her up for ideas on music repertoire. One of the first songs I taught my grade seven class was "Slow Dancing in the Snow." It was a crowd favourite.
Mrs Landon was one of those very special people that you meet and you remember forever - not for just what she did but for how she made you feel about yourself. Thank you Mrs Landon. So, so much. <3

Remembering ML --- from Jesse Dwyre - (former RDHS student )
Music teachers and drama teachers are very special people. If you are an arts kid - they are your mentors and guides especially through high school years. ML was mine.
Even before I got to high-school, Miss Landon and I had hit it off. She would let me sit in on the drums when the high-school bands did the Christmas tours to the elementary schools. I would look forward to it every year. I was obsessed with anything that had to do with music and I got to hang with the big kids for a bit. We had a count down from grade six on as to when I could be her drummer. She told me she had some fun plans for us (ie. the Rideau Stage Band) - What a very special entrance into grade 9.
Her separated classroom- 'the Portable'- was basically a club house where we could all be our crazy creative selves.
So many of us used that room as our home base, popping in and out at will. Half of us in volleyball pads or muddy soccer cleats honking away at notes, splitting time between all the extra curricular activities. Memories of playing the assemblies, the freezing Santa Clause parades, the scorching commencements, the wild school tours and competitive jazz festivals. Her bands gave the school life, spirit and excitement. Her class room was a room full of sound and colour and love. The Stage Band, the Concert band, the Choir and all of the rock bands we cobbled together - her space was a place to make noise and create. I don't know how she put up with it all. But the notes of 'Land of a Thousand Dances', 'Here there and Everywhere', 'Eastside Drive', 'Magnificent Seven' ' Dancing in the Snow', ' In the Jungle - rattle through my memory. We were good bands and under her conductors baton she taught us to work together and care about the music and each other and we did and... we had a blast!
As a student I was very lucky. ML made exceptions for me in ways that I still shake my head at. I, like so many others, am indebted to her for giving me a platform to rehearse, perform, act, imagine and write. She encouraged me in both theatre and music. She was keenly aware of the strengths of her students and helped us showcase them. She was also very patient in our areas of weakness. For as long as I had played- it was all by instinct and ear so my musical theory was AWFUL and my discipline was even more lacking in my teenage years- so - she helped me immensely when it came to actually learning new things, and slowing myself down to actually DO the work. I spent hours pouring over Transposition Charts and Cycle-of -5ths (all things drummers don't really use) but she helped me struggle though and chuckled at my frustration with love.
She loved her band kids a lot. Our band trips to Toronto and New York were highlights of the high school era - and of course, the theatre shows we saw helped send me down the career path I am on.
Outside of school she asked me to drum for her musicals in Brockville at the Art Centre and the big stone Church. Great fun, great exposure and more theatre experience which helped me grow immensely.
I last saw her at my grandmother's funeral in Elgin. ML graciously sang and played my grandma's antique piano at the service in Elgin. To have the chords of that very special instrument usher grandma into heaven was a very special tribute. I couldn't have asked for a more caring pianist. ML was sitting in the front pew by the piano before the service began, so I slipped in beside her and we got to reminisce and catch up as best we could through whispers. We even laughed a bit- somehow through the sadness of the day. She was very kind to play that event. After I delivered the eulogy she gave me a big hug and it felt like home to have her there. Strange to think of all that now...
Like so many of her students I could go on forever with remembrances. The Mr. William Morris ML -duo will forever be a team that we all adore. I heard this sad news through William. He and Miss Landon chuckling away together at the front of the room/ bus is an image that we all know and hold dearly.
These are just a few memories that I hope honour a wonderful woman, beautiful soloist, an inspiring teacher, a generous soul, the kindest heart.
Climb Every Mountain echoes in the sky now...
Love you ML

Anne Landon is an icon forever etched on the hearts of her music students and so many more. During my high school years, she inspired a love of music in me that wooed me to a career as an instrumental music teacher. My teacher’s college practicum was with her at Rideau in the music portable, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to be home sharing space with her as an adult. I had the privilege of leading a reunion band In celebration of her retirement. What an honour for all of us who participated! We gathered again under her leadership as the reunion band and choir performed during the RDHS 50th reunion, and had it not been for Covid, we would have assembled 10 years later! Anne was amazing! A generous heart with a quick wit, and a firm stance on what she believed. She was our defender, confidante and friend. She impacted our lives in no small way!! I am so grateful to have known her! God bless you forever, Anne! OX

Mrs Landon was such an inspiration to me as a student!
I wanted to be her. Her passion for music and teaching was so evident. I was involved in choir, concert band and stage band. On band trips my friends and I wanted an adjoining room to her. She was so much FUN! We would hang out with her in the music portable before home room, at breaks and after school. She was that ONE teacher that touched my life forever. I aspired to be a high school music teacher but made a last minute career decision and became a nurse instead. Mrs Landon sang at my wedding which was SO special. I had the privilege of performing at her retirement party at Rideau. It was such an honour! I have always been involved in music as a hobby and I thank Mrs Landon for that. She was SO lovely and I will never forget her. My condolences to her family.

Anne and I became firm friends throughout the years as I accompanied her students at Music Festival and for year end exams. Anne was always incredible prepared, She gave the music to me well in advance so I would be prepared and then had our rehearsal times planned so there was not a wasted moment for anyone. The music was exciting and the students always respectful and prepared. It was a pleasure to be involved at that level of music, especially music theatre night, usually the final night of festival.
I’m sure the Music Festival committee can attest to the preparedness of our Anne, as she would wheel her stacks and stacks of original music into the Arts Centre for the Adjudicators. For that evening, Anne and I sat up in the wings as we took turns playing for her students.
I will say overall Anne was concerned for students, knowing exactly how they would sing, expecting the most from them. And she was always complimentary of other teachers students. But she was also there for me too, making sure I had everything I needed. Those back stage evening will never be forgotten.
And then there was Joseph…. And the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Joey, Allison, Anne’s Choir from St Johns and other invited community singers. Another exciting experience!
I also enjoyed singing in Anne’s Choirs for the New Years Eve concerts. Now that was fun!
Anne, thank you for your beautiful voice, your beautiful smile and the many beautiful memories and experiences you brought to me. We were blessed knowing and making music with and for you!

I wish there was an accurate way to articulate what Anne Landon meant and means to me.
She has imprinted on me in a way no other person has and helped shape who I am. She brought music into my life, where it has stayed ever since and helped guide me to being not only a teacher, but a fierce supporter of the arts and a selfless volunteer. I learned all of these things from her and wanted so badly to be like her and make her proud. My beautiful, witty, honest and determined ML, I will never, ever forget you.

My middle name is Anne after Anne Landon. She was the best godmother I could have ever asked for. She shaped my life well beyond music. My mother was in her wedding when I was an obnoxiously growing fetus in her belly 44 years ago. She was always “Nanny” to me because, when I started talking, I couldn’t pronounce her name…and she will be Nanny forever more. My mother Anna, my sister Elizabeth, and my step-father Steve mourn her heavily. Love you, Nan.

I first met Anne when she arrived at Rideau District High School as our new Music Teacher at the beginning of the 1970’s. I clearly remember going to her classroom and welcoming her to our teaching team. I found her sorting through sheet music, trying to get the best possible learning experience set up for her students. The success that Anne established at RDHS was soon replicated by the influence on the musical scene that she started to establish in Brockville when she joined the Brockville Operatic Society and starred in their productions.
When I left Rideau in 1975 to become Head of the English Dept. at BCI, I stayed in touch with Anne and followed her path to church organist and choir director at a local church, all the while teaching her classes at RDHS and adding private students to her already busy days. As the Chair of St. John’s Ministry & Personnel Committee, I jumped at the opportunity to hire Anne when she expressed an interest in joining us as the Choir Director and Organist at St. John’s Brockville.
The rest, as they say, is history. A rich history of leading our church choirs, playing for our worship services, teaching private lessons at the church, mentoring so many young singers and musicians, and bringing the gift of music to so many people. When I retired from the Upper Canada DSB in January 2000, I asked Anne if she would grace our celebration with her “campy” rendition of “My Little Diva”. Thank you, Anne, for that great memory.
Social media has been filled with tributes to Anne and the impact that she had on various people’s lives, particularly her students. Cameron Wales, Brockville City Councilor, wrote a heartfelt message that summed up what Anne leant to so many people. “Anne Landon gave generously to her students and to our community. An exceedingly talented vocal coach, she had a special way of being direct, warm, and supportive all at once. She guided generations of performers in Brockville; if you never met Anne, you've likely met someone whose life she touched.
I saw Anne once a week after school for most of my high school career. I so looked forward to those lessons - often equal parts singing and informal therapy. Many a bad week was quickly made better by her listening ear, wise perspective, and the right piece of music.
I am at a loss, Anne. Thank you for being the person so many young people needed you to be, exactly when we needed it. Rest in peace, and know we sing for you.”
On Saturday, October 28th members of the SJUC Choir (and a few spouses) gathered at Anne’s home in Athens to spend some time with her and reminisce about past fun at Choir practices and parties. Looking back, we were fortunate to have those last moments with her as a group. In many ways Anne’s students, the St. John’s Choir and ALL her Brockville music contacts were part of her family. A family that has suffered a significant loss and will mourn the passing of a unique person for some time to come. As Ashley-Airhart Cross wrote, “I will miss her Christmas Eve treat of singing “O Holy Night” that St. John’s has had as a tradition for as long as I can remember.”
May Anne rest in the arms of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus.
