Only today, I realize the passing of Dries Arkeveld. My thoughts are with the family in their loss. My memories of Dries go back to the early 1950's. Not only did we live in the same street in Scheveningen/Holland, but we also went to the same Sunday school of the Reformed church. Still remember the chocolate drink and orange we got at Christmas. It was a treat as goods were scarce after the end of the 2nd world war. One day Dries and Gerrit disappeared out of my life when the family emigrated to Canada. I Will never forget this wonderful family. May God strengthen all of you, who have now been left behind in this life. Pastor Dirk Krommenhoek Auckland New Zealand.

Dear Wendy and families,
We were so sad to hear about the loss of Dreas. Always a smile and a friendly wave when we would meet him walking in the neighborhood with Wendy, or relaxing on the porch enjoying the lovely flower beds and charm of your beautiful property. It was obvious how much he loved his home and families. We are thinking of you at this very difficult time,
Linda and Lawrence Fox

Sincere condolences to his family.
As a new superintendent of schools, I had the pleasure of working with Dreas at the Carleton Board of Education. He was always available for sound advice and guidance. I'll remember his ever-present smile, his sense of humour, and his respect for his colleagues. He would make us laugh even on a bad day and see the prospect of a better tomorrow. It was a privilege to work with Dreas; his life lessons stay with many of us.

I am saddened to hear of Dreas' passing. Dreas was a neighbour, friend, and mentor to me. We have had the pleasure of living next to Dreas and Wendy for the last 12 years, and always looked forward to a hello, short visit, or a smile from afar. I was lucky enough to enjoy some of these visits (with a beer on occasion) on that incredible porch he built, and knew there was not an inch of their property and home that he did not have a hand in building or improving. I also served on the BYC board with Dreas for over a decade and always admired his leadership, opinion, calmness, wisdom, and sense of humor. He became not only a friend, but a mentor to me both during and after his time on the board.
Even though he was not able to communicate effectively verbally in the last couple years, he still loved to get out for walks either with Wendy or on his own. Last summer he and I walked a good section of the local neighborhood and trail system with my dog, which he walked as well and always enjoyed interacting with. Even though few words were exchanged between us during this walk or even over the last couple years, we still managed to share lots of smiles and laughs.
While I am saddened by his loss, I take some comfort in knowing that he and Wendy built a blessed, wonderful, successful, and happy life together with their family and friends. He worked hard, enjoyed every day, and left this world and our community a better place for being a member of it. Thanks Dreas!

Wendy and family
My deepest condolences to you all on the passing of Dreas.
I had the honour and pleasure of working for Dreas while he was CFO of the Carleton board. He was a wonderful mentor, while dealing with a situation not of his making and not what he had been lead to expect. Dreas's grin could light up a room and his sense of humour was just as infectious. His technical knowledge was immense and he was most generous in sharing it.
Would that every boss I've worked for had been as good as Dreas.

My deepest condolences to Wendy and the Arkeveld family. Quite often, I would see Dreas walking in the neighbourhood, either alone or with dear Wendy by his side. He always had a kind, lovely smile on his face. These past few months, I have missed seeing them along Anne and Hartley Streets. Rest in peace Dreas.

Wendy
I was saddened to hear that Dreas passed away.
When Dreas came to the Carleton Board of Education he became a trusted colleague and a very good friend to me. Combined with his vast knowledge of the education sector his sense of humour made meetings both productive and enjoyable.
Whether at our dining room table in Almonte, your table in Brockville or on your boat, my late wife Bev and I always enjoyed your company.
My thoughts are with you and I hope to see and your boys at his Celebration of Life.
