Obituary of Gwendolyn Eileen Landry

LANDRY, Gwendolyn Eileen

February 20, 1934 - December 13, 2024

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gwen (Schumacher) Landry at the age of 90 in Perth, Ontario. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Gwen was raised by her maternal grandparents, Anna and Peter Schumacher of Provost, Alberta.

After attending Luxembourg School and Provost Public School, she moved to Calgary and enrolled in Henderson Secretarial School.

In 1953, Gwen married Mike (Joseph Marcel) Landry in Calgary. To this union were born three children: Peter, Cindy and Sue.

Almost immediately after the wedding, Mike was posted to West Germany where he was stationed at Fort Beausejour, Iserlohn, Westphalia. They returned to Canada in 1955 and moved around as Mike was posted to: CFB Kingston, CFB Val Cartier, CFB Borden and Sarcee Barracks. In 1965 the family returned to the West German post of Fort Beausejour and resided in Hemer. They enjoyed times with many of their German friends from Mike’s previous posting there as well as visiting friends in Norway.

Mike’s last posting was once again to CFB Valcartier. The family eventually settled in Brockville after Mike retired from the military.

During all these postings, Gwen held various secretarial positions. She worked for the Military Police, a radio station, a high school, the Recorder & Times newspaper and at Parke Davis. She also picked tobacco one summer and worked at a theater food concession for a while. A versatile person!

Gwen was recognized as a very professional secretary, often reorganizing office procedures for better efficiency. Caring deeply about her family and friends, Gwen was extremely kind, thoughtful and compassionate. All her life she loved animals and contributed to their well being.

Gwen was a mother figure to many but especially Shelley, Kathleen, Cheryl and Anne Marie - all of whom she loved dearly.

Gwen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Peter (Carrie) of Brockville and Sue Landry of Perth; grandsons Ryan Pugh of Kingston and Michael Toohey of Lanark; sister Marion Kelch of Czar, AB; the Berube family of Beaumont, AB, whom she met later in life; the extended family of the Landrys and Arsenaults spread all across Canada; and her many dear friends.

Gwen was predeceased by her daughter, Cindy, in 1980 and her beloved husband, Mike, in 2004 as well as many other family members over the course of time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to the Brockville OSPCA or charity of your choice would be much appreciated.
