Obituary of Adrian Gobel Ten Cate - Ophthalmologist

Passed away peacefully on January 30, 2006 in Ottawa. He will be missed by his wife Karin and his children Evelyn Ten Cate (Rick) of London, Ontario, Linda Robinson (Brent) of Calgary and Eileen Ten Cate of Montreal. Stepfather of Joost Loijens of San Franciso, Rolf Loyens (Kylee) of Ottawa and Laura Loijens (Jesse). Grandfather of Christopher and Emily Robinson and Tys Loyens. Adrain was born July 14, 1932 in Leiden, the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1951. After 3 years in mining engineering at Queens University, he switched to medicine and gratuated with a specialty in Ophthalmology. In 1967 he settled in Brockville where he practiced for 34 years. He further specialized in cataract lens implant surgery. He taught this specialty on his many missions to third world countries. Every summer, for over a decade he also offered his services to the CNIB Mobile Eye Van Clinic in northern Ontario. Some of his greatest pleasures were sailing, playing tennis and skiing. He was also very involved in the history of eastern Ontario and published three pictorial histories on his town Brockville, the Thousand Islands and the Rideau Canal. The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to everyone involved in Adrian's care at the Ottawa Heart Institute and especially Dr. Michel LeMay for all of his efforts. Friends may call on Friday, February 3, 2006 between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Barclay Funeral Home 137 Pearl St. East, Brockville. A celebration of Adrian's life will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Brockville. In lieu of flowers, Adrian would like donations to be made to the Canadian National Institute for the blind.
