Dear Shirley, Chris and Mark:
My name is John Kersley. I was manager of the Toronto Dominion Bank at Slack & Merivale Roads where Interoptics
did their banking as In the early years the business was located on Grenfell Crescent near to the branch. We were both tenants of Uniform Developments.
Shirley, I believe you only visited the bank once, at the time of the sale of the business. But I recall on my way home from our cottage on the Upper Rideau near the narrows Locks stopping for a visit at your place on the Big Rideau. We talked about visiting in the winter to snow mobile with you but like so many things in life, other things got in the way.
And Chris we did have a good personal banking relationship for a number of years.
And I remember the relocation to brand new, owned premises in the business park just north of MacFarlane Road, which I visited on many occasions. I have lived for over 30 years in Country Place so pass this building many times per week and always think of Jeff and Chris and Shirley ?Streis??when passing. I was very impressed with the earthquake proof room where the ultra precision lathe was housed and that lenses were machined there for many large International Interests, including the NASA Space Observatory and numerous satellites.
Jeff and I had one major thing in common - the love of cars, fast cars which we would discuss frequently. I remember when Otto's was finally allocated an M5 BMW Jeff was the proud purchaser. He'd tell me how he was able to wind it up on the highway from North Gower to Smiths Falls. But on a chance meeting at Frisby Tire on Clye Avenue, he commented on how frequently he had to replace the soft but road hugging tires on his M5.Then one day he switched to pickup trucks. I'm still driving retro muscle cars. The lure of the pickup hasn't yet hit me.
One of my most vivid memories was the day he came in to the bank - he was livid. He had just been at the hospital seeing Mark after that terrible accident on Grenfell Crescent between vehicle and motorcycle. He was beside himself because an insurance rep had attempted to get Mark to sign a settlement. He left and went to a lawyer to explore what actions could be taken against this unscrupulous Insurance rep. I don't recall what the outcome of that situation was.
Shirley, ever since I read Jeff's obit in August, I have been recalling these memories and diarized today's Celebration of Jeff's Life in Brockville, determined to convey these memories to you and the boys in person and learn what your life path has taken in the past few decades. But as things would have it I underwent surgery this past Wednesday so am grounded.
The sad thing is that today's gathering would likely be the last chance for us to see each other.
I will always remember Jeff as a quiet and gentle person (I am recalling right now his smile and little giggle and the glint in his eye) but also his intellect which one could sense.
God bless you Shirley and know that I will think of all of you every time I drive by the former Interoptics building.
My sincere condolences to all of you.
John Kersley

I came to Interoptics some years ago in the hope that Jeff could find a way to make the solid Michelson interferometers for our SOHO spacecraft instrument. It was a great pleasure working with him, even the time in the salt room where we could assemble the units at near their operating temperature. Jeff learned a little from me, but I learned a lot from Jeff. His devotion, skill, and, most of all, enthusiasm at solving problems as he encountered them made that project one of the most enjoyable projects that I have worked on. Jeff made my visits to Nepean a highlight of my space science career. Again, it is a pleasure to have known and worked with Jeff.

We were very saddened to hear of Jeff's untimely passing. He was generous with his time and energy with both the CAT and RRR trails. He provided strong leadership and directon during the early days of The CAT acqusition of the rail bed and the RRR trail development and growth. If one word was to define him it would be INVOLVEMENT whether it was attending meetings, brushing trails to building bridges you could always count on him. We lost touch some years ago but I always look back on those times with fondness.
Marion & I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Dear Shirley,
We were so terribly sorry to see the sad news about Jeffery in Saturday’s Citizen. He was such a great guy, very kind and accomplished.
We have thought of you often on our tours of Big Rideau Lake and wondered how you were enjoying condominium life. We feel so sorry that we have not been in touch on our very infrequent trips to Brockville.
Please accept our sincere sympathy for your loss.

Dear Chris and family,
I was very saddened by the news of Jeff's passing; please accept my condolences.
Your Dad was a brilliant man, and one of the finest people I have ever met. Our history goes back to the early '80's when I was at Lumonics, where he was a great help to me, when I was a "know nothing" really in the field of optics.
Later he gave me the opportunity to work at the optics group, under somewhat difficult circumstances. He went out on a limb for me, which is something I will never forget.
He was a great teacher and mentor for me, as he was for so many other people I am sure.
I wish you, and your family, the very best at this difficult time.

We are saddened to hear of the unexpected passing of Jeff. Although we did not see him often, I got to know him as we both volunteered our time clearing and maintaining the snowmobile trails in the Rideau Lakes area. After their move to Brockville, we lost touch until moving there myself. We had just recently seen both |Jeff and Shirley around town. I will now miss the opportunity to connect again. Vic Code
