Obituary of Jeffery Robert Wimperis
WIMPERIS, Jeffery Robert
Died peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family on August 9, 2016 after complications following heart bypass surgery. He was born on October 23, 1941 in Ottawa, to Albert and Georgina Wimperis.
Beloved husband and best friend of his wife Shirley, loving father to Chris, Mark and the late Brent, and cherished Poppa Jeff to his two grandsons Mitchell and Jack. Dear brother of Tom Wimperis and his wife Jennifer.
His family knew him as a thoughtful, caring, and very generous patriarch. Jeff started his career in precision optics in 1959 at the National Research Council of Canada. He built and sold several very successful high tech businesses, both in Canada and the United States, including Interoptics which he operated from 1973 to 1990.
He had an illustrious career as a pioneer and inventor in the precision optics field. From some of the earliest laser optics, to devices that exist on the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory and many instruments aboard scientific satellites, Jeff had played a pivotal role in the advancement of research and development of both space and earth technologies. He left a legacy of well-trained young opticians at Lightmachinery Inc., of which he was a co-founder. He achieved a high level of admiration and respect from his peers through his brilliance and dedication to his work.
Jeff had many interests. He was an avid fisherman, salmon fishing on both the East and West Coasts, and trout fishing on Big Rideau Lake. He was a great chef and also enjoyed photography, woodworking, cycling and snowmobiling. After moving to Brockville he took pleasure in watching the activity on the St. Lawrence River and keeping track of the arrival of the different ships.
He will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of Jeff's Life will be held at the Tall Ships Landing Third Floor, 15 St. Andrew Street, Brockville (building can be accessed by either 15 St. Andrew Street or 6 Broad Street) on Sunday October 23, 2016 from 1 - 4 p.m. In memory of Jeffery donations to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
